Insights from “Crossroads and New Paths” webinar

Life is a journey filled with unexpected turns and pivotal moments that demand difficult decisions. These “crossroads” can feel daunting, whether they involve career shifts, personal challenges, or significant life changes. This week, the African Society for Social and Behavior Change hosted an insightful webinar, “Crossroads and New Paths,” featuring wisdom from renowned statistician and public health expert, Mr. Stephen Lwanga, and Professor Francis Omaswa. The interactive session offered invaluable guidance on approaching these critical junctures with courage and conviction.

Mr. Lwanga, drawing from his rich personal experiences, including navigating political instability and career shifts, presented four powerful considerations for anyone standing at a “fork in the road”

  1. Procrastination is Life Paralysis: Delaying decisions can stagnate progress and opportunities. Mr. Lwanga emphasized the importance of decisive action, sharing a compelling personal story of moving his family out of Uganda in 1977 due to political unrest.
  2. There Are No Wrong Choices: Every path, regardless of its initial appearance, offers valuable lessons and growth opportunities. The journey itself enriches your experience.
  3. Every Road Has Its Ups and Downs: Challenges are an inherent part of any chosen path. The key lies in having faith in your ability to overcome obstacles and learn from adversity.
  4. Go Boldly Forward and Don’t Look Back: Once a decision is made, commit to it wholeheartedly. Confidence and purpose in your chosen direction are crucial for moving ahead.

Professor Omaswa further enriched the discussion, echoing Mr. Lwanga’s sentiments and adding critical insights based on his own extensive experience. He powerfully reinforced the themes of self-belief and the continuous acquisition of valuable skills, stressing how these enable individuals to take charge of their destinies. Professor Omaswa also highlighted the unwavering importance of maintaining credibility throughout one’s professional and personal life. Sharing his own experiences of making significant career and life decisions, including moving his family for the sake of his children’s upbringing and education, he underscored the necessity of involving one’s immediate family in major decisions and the profound supportive role that faith can play during uncertain times.

The webinar emphasized that even paths born out of difficult circumstances can lead to profound growth and new opportunities. Their presentations were followed by an interactive Q&A segment that saw attendees seeking advice on overcoming procrastination, trusting instincts, and avoiding dwelling on “what ifs.” Both speakers consistently reiterated the power of self-confidence, learning from every experience, and moving forward with purpose.

This conversation on “Crossroads and New Paths”  is our timely reminder that while decisions can be complex, approaching them with courage, conviction, and a willingness to learn ensures that every journey, no matter how challenging, can lead to new and fulfilling destinations.
